Laws of the game
- Law 7: Duration of the Match
- 1) Periods of Play
- Two 45-minute halves
- Can only be shortened if both teams agree before match and competition rules allow it
- 2) Half-time Interval
- One 15-minute break between halves.
- One short one minute break for half time of extra time for drinks
- Competition must state how long half time is and only allowed to be altered with ref’s permission
- 3) Allowance for time lost
- Ref may allow for playing time lost by things such as:
- Subs
- Assessment and/or removal of injured players
- Wasting time
- Disciplinary sanctions
- Medical stoppages permitted by competition rules, e.g. ‘drinks’ breaks (should not exceed one minute) and ‘cooling’ breaks (ninety seconds to three minutes)
- Delays relating to VAR ‘checks’ and ‘reviews’
- Any other cause, including significant delay to a restart (e.g. goal celebrations)
- At final minute of half fourth official will indicate minimum amount of time decided by the ref. Ref can increase time if needed after but cannot reduce time.
- If error made in time keeping during first half ref will not compensate by changing time of second half.
- This is another reason why a bunch of refs wear two watches other than one possibly failing. Will have one run continuously and one that they stop when needed. This way they can compare and give an accurate amount of time to add for fourth official
- 4) Penalty kick
- Half will be extended for penalty kicks
- 5) Abandoned match
- Abandoned matches are replayed unless stated by competition.
- Law 8: The Start and Restart of Play
- Both halves of regular and extra time and after a goal is scored you use a kick-off to start play
- Free kicks (Indirect or direct), PKs, throw-ins, goals kicks and corner kicks are considered other restarts
- If a foul happens while the ball is not in play it does not change the restart
- 1) Kick-off
- Procedure
- Winner of coin toss decides which goal they want to attack or to take the kick-off
- Loser either gets to take the kick or decides which goal they want to attack
- The team that didn’t get the kick-off first half gets it the second half
- Second half teams switch sides of the field
- After a goal is scored the team that got scored on restarts play with a kick-off
- For every kick-off:
- All players must be in their own half, except the one taking the kick-off
- Opponents must be 10 yds or 9.15 m from the ball until it is played during kick off (Circle on the field around the middle dot is this distance and helps everyone know how far is ok).
- Ball must be stationary on the center mark
- Ref gives signal to start
- Ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves
- A goal can be scored from a kick-off. If the kicker scores an own goal (so the person taking the kick-off accidentally kicks the ball in his own goal) a corner kick is awarded.
- Offenses and sanctions
- If the kicker of the kick-off touches the ball before anyone else does (so double touches the ball) an indirect free kick against his team is given. If the second touch is a handball, then a direct free kick is awarded.
- Any other kick-off procedure offense (like if someone is too close before kick is taken) and the kick-off is retaken.
- 2) Dropped ball
- Procedure
- Ball is dropped in the box for the goalkeeper if play was stopped:
- The ball was in the penalty area or
- The last touch of the ball was in the penalty area
- All other cases ball is dropped for a player of the team that last touched the ball where it last touched a player, an outside agent or, as outlined in Law 9.1, a match official
- Anyone other than the person taking the kick must be at least 4 m or 4.5 yds from the ball until it is in play (this includes his teammates)
- When the ball hits the ground, it is in play
- Offenses and sanctions
- Ball is dropped again if:
- Touches a player before the ground
- Goes out of bounds after it hits the ground but before touching a player
- If the dropped ball enters the goal without touching two players, it is restarted with:
- Goal kick if it enters the opponent’s goal
- Corner kick if it enters the team’s goal
